Wild Beasts Poster

This poster, for the Wild Beasts‘ show at the Black Cat next month, went out this weekend. I did it in 2 colorways, one on Starch Rain Speckletone, and one on Chocolate Speckletone, both 25″ x 19″ with editions of 50 for each. I’ll post photos when I get them back from Grand Palace.

The show should be great… I feel like the Wild Beasts are a bit slept on. Their last album, Two Dancers, is in my irrelevant opinion, one of the better albums that came out last year. It’s kind of dancy and accessible, but still manages to have some dark and weird qualities that make it unique. I’m not sure why they haven’t become really popular… or maybe they have, and I just need to get out more. Either way, I’m really excited to see them live… you should come too, and buy a poster.

    Hi John,

I really love the WIld Beasts and unfortunately I missed their show here in Toronto because I hadn’t started listening to them until after the show (I kick myself often but remind myself that they’ll be back).
Anyway, I was introduced to MBV by my brother and come across some rather incredible posters created by some incredibly talented people. This was one of them. Can you tell me where you drew inspiration to design this particular poster?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    So long,
    Dale.

Hi Dale, thanks for the comment. The inspiration for this poster came mostly from the “Two Dancers” album artwork. Originally I intended on using the image of the woman on one poster and doing the second identical, but with a mans face (playing off the two dancers theme, and the 2 faces on the album cover) - this didn’t work out compositionally, and I ran out of time…

The minimal, modern style was kind of a reference to their musical style - I like how crisp and accessible the band’s sound is, but I also like that they have a somewhat unconventional lead vocal style (the whole falsetto thing) - i felt like the serious french actress with the animal horns conveyed this… somehow…
